See ya next summer!
Well, there's no denying it now-is there? summer appears to be over and as we dig out the sweaters and watch the leaves fall, we are busy thinking up ways to make the next Funky Flea as fun and exciting as this summers two markets were. We'll be meeting over the next few months to brainstorm ideas on the who what where and how. Look for us again next spring at this blog and on facebook. Let's see, we've done the Westside and the Northside...........hmm............where will the Funky Flea pop up next summer? Stay tuned to find out...............

another hint
Unfamiliar with the Northside? Concerned you won't be able to find the lot where the coolest market in town is happening this saturday? Have no fear! All ya gotta do is drive down North Salina Street and look for this amazing castle like building at the juncture of Prospect Ave and Salina Street. The Funky Flea is 2 spots down! The "castle" houses the Open Hand Theater Museum. It was built in 1890 by Charles Hoffman, president of the National Brewing Company. He wanted a home for his family that was a replica of a castle he loved in his native Germany. It has housed a variety of groups and business' over the years, but has been the headquarters for Open Hand Theater Museum of Masks and Puppets since 1999. Maybe we'll see an impromptu performance from the Open Hand theater................

The skinny on Salina Street
This weekends Funky Flea is happening on a very historic and architecturally interesting spot in Syracuse! The area known as the Northside, Little Italy or just North Salina has some of the oldest storefronts and most unique architecture in the city! This mysterious building sits at 537/539 North Salina Street and is visible from the Funky Flea lot. It must, surely, be the skinniest building in town! Look how narrow it is! I have wondered about this building for years. It, at one time, sold pasta, and I have been told that it was just a little old lady and her son cranking out the pasta and selling it at a counter. Each time I have been photographing this building, someone came along and talked to me about this place. It seems to hold alot of intrigue for many people. Anyone got the skinny on this skinny structure?

why is this man smiling?
Here's one of our vendors from the First Funky Flea who will be joining us again. Meet Nick! He loves to thrift and had an amazing collection of Syracuse regional memorabilia at his booth last time. His booth mate Jason is the designer of those wonderful prints of the neighborhoods of Syracuse. A great team! They both love Syracuse and we love them right back!
One is silver and the other gold...
Remember the Brownie song about friendship?
Make new friends
but keep the old
One is silver
and the other gold
OK-it's just as confusing to me as an adult, silver? gold? Huh? Anyway, we here in Funky Fleaville are singing this song to celebrate the fact that we not only have lots of new vendors applying, but many of our friends from the First Flea will be coming back! Hip! Hip! Hooray!!
Fifteen of the brave souls who signed up for our first event are comin' back to do it all over again! (and quite a few wanted to come back, but had conflicts on that date) We are so happy to have them back! It will truly add to the mad mish mash of goodies on display on August 27th. They will be joining at least 25 new people selling their bric a brac, clothing, artwork, housewares, records, audio equipment, etc etc.
It's gonna be amazing!

Dear Funky Flea
Dear Funky Flea,
I hope you can help me! My mother in law has been buying me gifts for all occasions for over six years now. We have a great relationship-so this is not one of those "mother in law complaint" letters. She is very kind to be so generous-but she totally doesn't get my style. I never felt right asking her for the receipts to return things and it has now kind of gotten out of control. I have piles of home decor, books, barware kitchen gadgets and even clothing that she has given me that just aren't me. I feel bad having all these things that I don't use in my home, but I don't know what to do with them. Can you offer me any advice?

Dear Guilty D:
First off-no reason to feel guilty! When you are given a gift-it is a gesture on the bearers part to thank you or to celebrate an event in your life. You are free to do whatever you wish with them, and this is understood by both giver and receiver. My advice is to gather up those items, bring them to the North side on August 27th and sell them at the FUNKY FLEA! People poured out in droves to shop at the first Funky Flea in June. You're mom in law gifts may not be YOUR style, but they are probably someone else's! All you need to do is fill out an application by FRIDAY, AUGUST 5th, and join the already over 35 vendors we have lined up to sell those goods at our 2nd Flea Market. Go on-apply today! And after you make some good cash at the Funky Flea, selling those goodies, take the money to take out your mother in law to dinner!

Flea fashion!!
Check out Miss Wednesday Shedd sporting her funky flea market style! Wednesday came to the Funky Flea sporting this colorful and awesome ensemble, but added the knit squid hat and two tone shoes after purchasing them from 2 different vendors. We love that she didn't wait to wear them! Wednesday is a high school senior who lives in the Westcott neighborhood with her parents, brother and kitten named Pancake. She enjoys singing and acting and is off to college at Marywood university in the fall. Thanks for looking so Funky Flea Fashionable Wednesday!

Tick tick tick tick......
Inspired in Brooklyn
The scouting trip to the Brooklyn Flea was super fun and very informative! It is a great market and one that we hope to grow up to be like! There was a fantastic mix of vintage housewares, hand made items, clothing, artwork and food vendors. A great place to spend an entire day. I hope our Funky Flea carries a little bit of that Brooklyn Flea vibe.
